Bless me readers, for I have sinned. I’ve abandoned this post for way too long. My virtual disappearance does not point to an actual disappearance, however….only to falling down the well of September holidays / community life / motherhood / daughterhood / work (you know – the kind that pays me.)

I’ve always been a good juggler, but flying trapeze artist was beyond my set of talents. (Tightrope, I do better. But that’s for another post, on religion.) In any event, I guess I fell off.

This contemplation of filling multiple roles got me thinking about a piece I wrote in the Jerusalem Report a few years back, on the biblical story of Abraham and the Binding of Isaac. I suggested that this (in)famous Divine “test” was not exactly a trial of faith, but rather, an attempt to clarify for Abraham which of his many roles and identities would serve him best as he got set to build nations. Some of you may note that this story is especially relevant seeing as it was the Torah portion read in synagogues this past weekend.

Check out the full text of that piece here. It’s one of my favorites.

In any event, I look forward to writing an actual full length post in the coming days, further contemplating the various roles we play throughout our lives. I have a lot more to say about it.

  2. Look forward to reading. Maybe the challenge in juggling is because, as some successful women have cynically said: we need another wife.

But that relegates women to a lesser role. So, being egalitarian, maybe what we need is an additional, significant other!

Israelis have an easier time; their parents can often be called on to help us juggle. So I’m looking to be adopted!

  4. How I have missed you. And I am laughing because I helped a kid write his d’var torah for his bar mitzvah on Abraham. Big discussion. Big. Discussion.
